Summary

In today's globalized and knowledge-driven era, where inclusive societies, human rights, and sustainable economies are paramount, the significance of knowledge and skills cannot be overstated. 

With US$4.5 million in funding from Switzerland, UNDP supports ongoing educational reforms in Georgia, focusing on developing a robust Vocational Education and Training in Agriculture (A-VET) system. 

Building upon the successes of its preceding phases spanning from 2013 to 2023, this three-year-long initiative (2022-2025) aims to promote public-private partnerships and enhance agricultural extension services, all crucial elements in fostering sustainable rural development.

At its core, it seeks to improve competencies in alignment with market demands, facilitating increased (self)-employment opportunities and higher incomes. This, in turn, fuels the growth of a resilient rural economy and leads to improved livelihoods for various groups including youth, women, and vulnerable populations.

Partnerships

The project is conducted in partnership with key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, educational institutions, private enterprises, and civil society organizations.

What We Do

Operating at both national and local levels, UNDP and Switzerland focus on three key areas: institution building, system development, and service provision. We address the evolving sector's needs by emphasizing high-quality A-VET and extension services and ensuring sustainability.

Our project is poised to achieve two main outcomes:

1. Enhanced Quality of A-VET and Extension Services: By fostering effective cooperation among public and private stakeholders, the project seeks to elevate the quality of A-VET and extension services throughout Georgia.
2. Market-Driven Agricultural Knowledge and Skills: Through tailored initiatives, the project equips rural communities, including youth, women, and vulnerable groups with relevant agricultural knowledge and skills that directly respond to market demands, enhancing their employability and economic prospects.

Expected Results

The project targets several beneficiaries, including six public A-VET colleges across different regions, ten state-run Information Consultancy Centres under the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, and the ‘Agro Duo’ organization representing the private sector in agricultural education. Additionally, the project aims to benefit 15,000 farmers and 2,500 A-VET graduates.

By adhering to these objectives and outcomes, the Modernization of Vocational Education and Training System in Agriculture and Rural Development – Phase 3 project aims to make significant strides towards building a more sustainable and prosperous future for Georgia's rural communities.
