BK21 Seminar: UNDP’s Global Work on Forests
UNDP Seoul Policy Centre (USPC) hosted a seminar titled “BK21 Seminar: UNDP’s Global Work on Forests” on 4 August 2023, jointly organized with BK21 FOUR R&E Center for Environmental Science and Ecological Engineering at Korea University. The seminar aimed to connect young researchers and students interested in UNDP’s global work on forests with Tim Scott, UNDP's Senior Technical Advisor on Environmental Governance as the keynote speaker.
Mr. Scott highlighted UNDP’s strategies for sustainable forest management and their alignment with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He also emphasized various aspects such as the significance, challenges and opportunities of forests, underlining the importance of sustainable forest management for achieving development goals. The event also encompassed UNDP’s pivotal role in fostering partnerships, implementing strategies, and catalysing positive change in the context of forests and sustainable development.
Following Mr. Scott’s presentation, Anne Juepner, Director of USPC, provided an overview of USPC and the Centre’s collaborative work with Korea University. The seminar concluded with an interactive Q&A session among students and researchers where various topics were explored including on identifying funding mechanisms for UNDP projects, financing vertical funds, strategies to ensure the long-term sustainability of projects, and UNDP’s interventions in disaster risk reduction and management.
Collaboration with Korean partners for sustainable forestry
On 3 August, USPC Director Anne Juepner, Policy Specialist Arnaud Debauge and UNDP Senior Technical Advisor Tim Scott met with Korea’s National Institute of Forest Science (NIFoS), USPC’s main Korean partner for knowledge exchange on sustainable forestry. UNDP and USPC also engaged with new partners, the Asian Forest Cooperation Organization (AFoCO) and Korea Forest Service (KFS), on 4 August. The meetings aimed to strengthen collaboration between UNDP and the ROK towards sustainable forestry and the shared goals of advancing sustainable forest management through collaborative ODA projects, expanding the geographic scope of their efforts, and facilitating capacity-building initiatives in partner countries.
